My brother put me on to this young man a few weeks ago, and I have fallen in love. His latest mixtape, "Nostalgia" is a beautifully comical, melancholy blend of tracks. One of my favorites being "Swim Good" - a twisted love song about losing the one who holds his heart.
After listening two or three times, I realized that there are so many ways to interpret the lyrics. He sings of loading up his car and driving on a straightaway until the road ends, listening to Kanye's "808 And Heartbreak" album. Everyone knows that was an emotionally fueled CD, after his last break up. Now, my twisted imagination takes this song in so many directions. Has he killed his girlfriend, stashed her in the trunk with intentions of dumping the car and swimming to Mexico?
Does he plan on driving his car into the ocean and drowning because he lost his girlfriend?
Is this a metaphor to describe disposing of the old memories his former relationship held? Getting rid of everything that reminds him of his ex, then washing himself clean in the waters of Minnetonka?
The eerie ending to the track leaves lots to imagine. Each song does the same; some end in comedy, others in tragedy. You'd never even think of his affiliation with Odd Future, but then again - you've gotta be kinda sick to hang with Tyler the Creator...
Still no plane at the gate. Great. ((puts mixtape on loop))
