Miguel - "Quickie" ((Official Video))

One of the best songs on his All I Want Is You album. I love the tempo, and the sexy vibe. Not into  quickies, but I can dig it, lol. The noir theme adds to that mysterious vibe - abstract is always a great artistic point to take. Enjoy!

Miguel - "Quickie..."

Hoping "Teach Me" will be the next single. Fingers crossed!!

Matters of the Heart...

So, we're going through something. But what friends don't? I just never realized how deep the wound ran. Nobody told me. I think I should have been a nurse, because I'm always trying to fix things - always looking to mend broken hearts. Make everything perfect so the smiles stay natural and genuine. Stomping around with this tool kit for everyone else - and forgot all about myself.

So, this time around, I took a leap. Instead of pulling out the sutres and performing surgery - I leave it on the operating table, barely breathing. I stand back and let fate/destiny battle - because only one can win. Who am I to tamper with God's plan?

Sometimes we grow apart to get closer. Other times, we morph into creatures that just can't run in the same crew. I'm a pack animal, not one of a herd. Sometimes I lead, sometimes I fall back and take the second row like a wolf. At no time, do I walk behind anyone like a cow. I won't start today. So, I let the tumbleweed of awkwardness roll - who knows where it will stop?

Sometimes, we've got to dig deep. Deep enough to find strength. To understand the choices people make, the things people say, the way they behave. Once we get to that level, we can decide whether they are acts of human nature, or the wounded heart of an individual. It's often very difficult to tell the difference. We all have wisdom within us - but even a shaman has much to learn. Sit back and observe. Learn not to pass judgement. And be honest as best as you can. Following that path will guarantee your spot in the sunshine. Some of us need a little more light...

Each year we grow a little wiser; a little more introspective and aware. With this knowledge comes the ability to choose. Which path will you take? That, my friend - is not for me to decide. I wish you all the best. Love is love. <3

Kanye West Sparks New Women's Clothing Line...

A lot of buzz has been circulating around this idea - and I think it is brilliant.

Over the past few years, we have watched Kanye evolve into this fashion icon - creating his own niche and making it home. Young men rocking college crest sweaters, fitted jeans and mid top sneakers. Nerdy glasses, backpacks became the movement. All because one outspoken black man decided to wear what he enjoyed, rather than what the stylists put on him. He is a visual afficionado; matching various textures and colors effortlessly. Even the tight leather pants started a frenzy. A women's line sounds beyond appropriate, and I think the sky is the limit for him.

2008 MTV Awards...

Now - let's see the price point, and that will be the real deal maker/breaker. He has gone from an underground sensation to a mainstream idol - this brings up his market value immensely. Hopefully he's remember the little people and make sure it is a tangible dream for us.

This is definitely motivation for me to get my line up and running. I gotta touch the sky...

Megastar Kanye West and his forays into fashion have been well documented over the course of his career and it appears that the stylish producer and rapper will be releasing a new line later this year in a collaborative effort with award winning British fashion designer Louise Goldin. Goldin, 30, was mentored by fashion expert and director of design school Central Saint Martins’ fashion master’s program Louise Wilson – and the professor gave Kanye West quite a ringing endorsement.
2009 VMAs
In a report to British paper The Guardian, Ms. Wilson offered, “I've known him for two years now and he's incredibly knowledgeable about fashion, he's a global phenomenon and a very interesting person. I think we can expect a well-considered collection, you wouldn't expect less from a pair of professionals and I warn against dismissing it in haste.”
The professor continued with, “There are those who might assume Louise will be doing all the work and Kanye is just the face, I don't believe this will be the case – he researches thoroughly and is hands on and committed to his work.” Reports say that West and Goldin’s upcoming "womenswear" line will have a possible launch later this year at New York’s Fashion Week festival.
Kanye isn’t the only high profile name dipping his toe into the fashion pool. Young Money boss Lil Wayne told XXL last week that he too wants to begin his own clothing line, although the plans seem lofty for now. “I just figure that I… I’m funky,” Wayne shared. “I got that from my stylist, Marisa. I’m funky, like she say.”
Night out at the Met
Wayne wrapped up by saying, “A year from now, I want all these items to be mine. Rebirth. I want – I just figure people want to be funky like me, so I got my clothing line.” Rebirth was also the title of Lil Wayne’s eclectic seventh studio album.

Sn3akrfr3akr - TK Society...

So, I'm saying goodbye to another pair of kicks. My 2009 Supra TK Society Perforated sneakers. I wanted these for so long - when I finally copped them for my birthday, I was ecstatic. They were so comfy! And I got the matching bag - you couldn't tell me anything...

There's something about being a SneakerHead that's exciting. The thrill of pursuing a pair of shoes that you may or may not find. Being a female in the game, it is especially difficult to find small sizes - so when I get my hands on a gem, I truly feel accomplished. This was one of my greatest conquests - and I can't wait to see them on the feet of another. I always said I would keep them on display - but what a waste that would be...

Fitness 2.0 - Yoga for Life...

My body, last year...
I got seriously introduced to yoga about two years ago, when my friend Blaine opened up his Kemetic Yoga studio. Since then, I've been on and off with the practice. Back in my apartment, it was an every day ritual to do yoga on my lakefront patio - I can't even tell you how calming that is. Now, I've been so concerned with weight training that I forgot all about it. But I'm back on it now...

Doing yoga in the past made me a lot longer and leaner, which is crucial for us short girls. I love the way my abdominals felt, the way my arms looked, and most of all - I retained my butt. Weight training has made me a lot more firm and "stacked," but I love the smooth lines that yoga can give.

After two months of daily yoga...
Not to mention, Yoga is incredible for fat burning. The resistance that is needed to hold your body in each position burns so many calories. At the end of a 60minute session, you are guaranteed to be sweaty and a little sore afterwards.

It's not as hard as it seems, so I have gathered together some simple positions to jump start any fitness regimen. I usually have a banana in the morning before I start; the potassium is really good for your muscles...

Yoga for Beginners (10min):

Cobbler's Pose
The Cobbler's Pose is the introductory position, it helps to loosen the inner thigh muscles and relax you before you begin...

Pelvic Tilts are strengthen the lower back muscles, particularly the abdominals. Feel free to throw some Kegels in there, while you're at it ;-)

The Cat-Cow Pose strengthens the back muscles and also helps to stretch the spine. This is one of my favorites...

The infamous Downward Facing Dog: Works EVERY muscle in your body.
Shoot, muscles you didn't even know existed.
Abdominals and core are strengthened with this move.

Standing Straddle Forward Bend - stretches the back and hamstring muscles.
Takes time to get down that far, but I guarantee you will feel a difference in days...

For more detailed instructions on yoga moves, check them out here.

My legs are so sore from today's stretches, but I should be back to my old, bendy self in a few weeks. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

Summer Music: Rufus Blaq...

The name probably rings a bell - that's because he's produced music for so many of our favorite artists like Missy Elliot, Faith Evans, Day 26. It's possible you've NEVER heard of him before - since he's ghost written for big names that you swear write their own 'ish. Not only is he sick with the pen, but he has incredible vocal skills and is a true lyricist. I have the privilege of being friends with this musical wonder, and his re-emergence has been long overdue.

"Electric Pretty" is his newest endeavor; bringing a fresh new approach to familiar Hip-Hop beats and a melodic voice over each track. His cover of Jay-Z's "Thank You" is an ode to NY, and brings me back to summers in the Bronx.

"6 Foot Pretty:" ((Video))

"Companionship" ((Video))
Retrospect on an old life. Inspiration for a new...

Tichina Arnold speaks about Rufus on the Mo'Nique Show:

I'm really diggin' this album; definitely a good listen and rides good in the car.
He puts his all into the music, and it loves him back. Take a listen, and enjoy.

What's in MY Stereo...

I try to keep my live radio intake to morning shows and a monthly check to see what's new. Other than that, I look up my favorite artists and see what they have out. Right now, I'm diggin' a few mixtapes. I have a road trip coming up in a week, and my playlist has to be something serious. Here's a quick glance at the songs in my head right now...

Kendrick Lamar: "Alien Girl (Today With Her)"

His point of view on the girl he's infatuated with. I love the instrumentals, and respect the young ladies walking the earth carrying themselves like alien species. Not too many of us out here. AND He's a Cancer, 24 like me. Dig the remix, too...

The Weekend: "Trust Issues"

Another force to be reckoned with out of Toronto, The Weekend has penned so many of Drake's hits - and also Rebecca Black's "Friday" - don't ask. His drug references and slow tempos had to grow on me, but this one was instant.
I love the grind in the beat, and his high pitches are killer...

Drake: "Marvin's Room (Official Video)"

This song hit close to home this week, got a call from my ex...
I guess this is how he's feeling.
The song itself has caused a musical frenzy, with covers from JoJo (my favorite), Teyana Taylor, Willie Taylor (Day 26) and probably your cousin in his basement studio...
Breakups are hard, especially if you know it's your fault - right?

Frank Ocean: "Nature Feels"

This is my feel-good anthem of the summer. I can't explain what the instrumentals do to me, but I like the sensation. The double meanings in all his songs intrigue me, and leave so much to be imagined. Roll your windows down, pull the top back and enjoy...

((Chopped & Screwed)) - sorry...

C-Ride feat. Lloyd - "Yes"

I love C-Ride's delivery, tone of voice and overall skill. His songs for women are always on point. Lloyd is a good look on the track, and the intstrumentals are a great way to set the mood. In the most gangter way possible, lol

Chris Brown - "Wet The Bed"
Self-explanatory...

That's all for now - I'll continue throughout the week. Feel free to inbox me some more suggestions: sn3akrfr3akr@gmail.com - I'm always ready for more music!

Letting Go...

It's so hard, to say goodbye...

Yes, the sneaker head is downsizing her collection. For no reason other than a transitional stage in life. I look at all the shoes and things I have, and wonder why I still have them? I haven't worn some of these kicks in years. Some have never been worn. I'm not in my apartment anymore, so they're not on display. Why not let someone else enjoy them? Granted, I am keeping my originals and favorites, but a lot of the retros would be better in a new home. First on my list - the coveted Aqua VIII's. Which have a funny story behind them.

I never planned on buying them. A guy friend of mine really wanted a pair, and I offered to stand on line and buy one. When I finished scouring the earth for his size, I realized they had one for me, too. Standing in line, the shoes were staring at me, I was smitten by the colorway and decided to buy them for myself. Paid a grip. He picked up his shoes, and in my haste, I forgot to collect my money from him. And never saw my dough again. Lol, he knows who he is...

I have graduated to shoes and pumps now, and even those have lost so much meaning to me. I don't know when I became materialistic - but nowadays my life is all about finding happiness. Shoes and clothes don't necessarily bring that. Although, there are times in life when the right pair of shoes/kicks make everything feel right. Hopefully, I can pass that feeling on to another...

Fort Lauderdale Commemorates the End of Beach Segregation...

You'd be surprised how much history Fort Lauderdale really has. My good friend Dan slipped this article to me today, and it really piqued my interest. Trust and believe I'll be doing more research on this, it further solidifies why I am all about empowerment and cultural pride. People don't understand that there was a time when we couldn't even swim on certain parts of the beach. Can you imagine?? Yet some of us carry ourselves with as little class as the stray dogs running on the street.  We have truly come a long way - and I appreciate it all...

Fort Lauderdale commemorates end of beach segregation

Fort Lauderdale is posting a historical marker on the spot where a handful of black leaders waded into the ocean in their fight to end segregation.

IF YOU GO
• Eula Johnson House ceremony: 9 a.m. at 1100 NW Sixth St. in Fort Lauderdale.
• Wade-in historic marker: 11 a.m. at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard.
All events are open to the public and are free. There will be a free trolley service provided between the locations. To reserve a seat on the trolley, call 954-828-4755.

SPECIAL TO THE HERALD

It was July 1961, and if black residents of Broward County wanted to go to the beach, their only option was a one-mile stretch of sand south of the Port Everglades Inlet.
There was no road that led to “Colored Beach.’’ To reach it, blacks had to take a ferry. Once there, there were no restrooms, tables, shelter or fresh water.
A handful of leaders in the black community — local NAACP President Eula Johnson, black physician Dr. Von D. Mizell, four black college students and a third black adult whose name was not recorded in history — led a series of “wade-ins’’ at the whites-only Fort Lauderdale Beach.
On Monday, the city will post a historical marker at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard, the spot where Johnson and Mizell first led a small team of protestors onto white-only beaches on July 4, 1961.
“We want beach-goers who see the plaque to know they are standing on historical ground,” said Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Bobby DuBose.
The wade-ins, and their historic mark on Broward County, are being commemorated as part of the city of Fort Lauderdale’s year-long, centennial celebrations.
Johnson and Mizell knew the beaches were the public face of Fort Lauderdale and would provide a wide stage in their fight for equality, said Centennial Historian Susan Gillis.
“They wanted to make a very public statement that this isn’t right, and we need equal access and equal facilities,” Gillis said.
The six-week series of wade-ins, which brought national headlines, led to lawsuits against Johnson and the NAACP, as well as frequent threats against her life.
It took a year before a Broward judge refused the city’s request to stop the protests and the beaches were open to everyone.
The wade-ins gave life to a broader fight for civil rights in Broward County, Gillis said. Johnson and other local black leaders held voter registration drives, sit-ins, protests over segregated hiring practices, and pushed for the desegregation of local restaurants, hotels and within the police and fire departments.
“Eula Johnson was like our local Rosa Parks. What she did expanded beyond Broward County,” DuBose said.
The city will also mark the anniversary by cutting the ribbon on Johnson’s newly renovated former home, at 1100 NW Sixth St., where the wade-ins were organized.  The home will now serve as the offices of the local NAACP chapter.
“It is going to be an awakening for the community to know what history was made in our community, in that house,” said Marsha Ellison, president of the Fort Lauderdale-Broward Branch of the NAACP.
Johnson moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1935. Widowed shortly after, she supported three children by doing domestic work, then by operating a service station in the front of her home.
Though she had no formal education, her family remembers her as a strong businesswoman, outspoken, with a passion for people and civil rights.
“I think the restoration is a real salute to her,’’ said grandson Gregory Johnson. “I don’t think she had it in mind, but I think she would have loved it.”
Eula Johnson passed away in 2001 at the age of 94.
The Northwest Community Redevelopment Agency bought the home in 2008, intending to tear it down. But the local NAACP had other ideas. After a $275,000 renovation, the house contains a welcome center, offices and a section dedicated to the struggles of Johnson and the local NAACP.
After the ribbon-cutting at the Johnson home, guests will board trolleys for a ride to Fort Lauderdale beach where they will be invited to re-enact the wade-ins.
Unlike 50 years ago, Ellison said they anticipate a much different reception.
“Fifty years ago, the police would not let us on the beach,’’ said Ellison. “This year, we will be escorted by the police to the beach.”

24; Another Year Wiser...

So, I've been 24 for a little over a week now, and I can say I feel the difference. Each year is a learning experience, and boy did I go through a lot.

Twenty-Four is not particularly a "milestone age," but I've gotta say, 23 was a wild ride. I lost and regained valuable friends, moved in and out of my first apartment, and fell in and out of love. In retrospect, I really learned a great deal.

  • Never Put All Your Eggs In One Basket
    • Because if you trip and fall  - you lose everything. This age-old word of advice applies in so many aspects of my life; financially, socially and romantically. Always have a backup plan. Every smart woman knows that. I, of course - learned the hard way. Never again ((shakes fist))

  • Fembots  Have Feelings, Too - Speak Up!
    • As a "good girl," we often get lost in the sauce; trying to please everyone and do everything all at onc. Eventually, we learn that this ultimately wears us out. This usually results in a breakdown or system overload. If something is on your mind - say so! There is no use in carrying all that stress around. You will end up sad and moserable - Superwoman needs to be at top performance! In the end - nobody cares if you suffer, as long as you are around to help them (on a pessimist note). On a positive tip, no one can help you lighten your load if they do not know it's getting heavy! So, speak your mind - I guarantee someone is listening. You never know, you might actually get what you want.

  • Don't Worry - Be Happy
    • Things are out of your control? Don't stress it. In all honesty, the issues will still be there whether you cry about it or not. The best approach is to calm down, keep a level head and approach the situation in the best way possible. Keeping a cool head gives you a better perspective, and most of the time you will find that the problem isn't as bad as it seems. "Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week." Hov said it...

  • Love Hard - Laugh Harder
    • Relationships don't always work out. Instead of hiding under the covers and wishing death on yourself - get out! Find distractions, go out with your friends, have fun! Pretty soon, you'll get over it, and you can look back in retrospect and take your lesson from it.

  • Family First
    • Friends come and go (some of them), but family is forever. Cherish the moments with your loved ones, appreciate them  and do your best to solve all conflicts. Because when they're gone - they're gone...
Thank you to everyone who has played a role in my life over the past year. I really and truly appreciate having you all in my life. Where would I be without you?
